Back Injuries May Vary In Degree

There are various degrees of back injuries and not every one has to be catastrophic to qualify as a serious injury. According to the web site webmd.com, lower back pain effects 25% of all Americans, is one of the most common type of severe pain, and the most frequent type of disability in adults under age 45. Although not life threatening, a serious back injury can have devastating consequences to your ability to go out and make a living, feed your family and provide the basic necessities of life for them. A serious back injury can cause severe, constant, permanent pain and as such can cause immobility and prevent you from doing the work that you were trained to do. You don't have to have paralysis from a catastrophic spinal cord injury to have a debilitating back condition. If the mere act of walking or bending at the waist causes excruciating pain, you may have suffered a severe back injury.

Most Common Low-Back Injuries & Treatment

The most frequent type of lower-back injury is called a herniated disc and such an injury can cause constant pain requiring years of surgery. Surgeries are often combined with physical therapy and chiropractic treatments to try and help alleviate the pain. In addition to not being able to walk and bend, a person may not even be able to sit in a chair comfortably without experiencing severe pain. As a result, in order to merely function at a minimum level, victims of chronic back pain are prescribed some of the strongest pain medications available.

The most common medication for lower-back pain are over-the-counter medications categorized as anti-inflammatory. Anti-inflammatory drugs sold in drug stores are ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve).  In terms of strength, these drugs are relatively minor and represent only a first attempt to treat lower-back pain.

As is often the case, people with severe, chronic lower-back pain will graduate from anti-inflammatories to muscle relaxants that are designed to relieve back spasms. Muscle relaxants are marketed under the brands Flexeril,  Zanaflex, Lioresal, and Soma. These drugs have the side effects of making you drowsy and are often prescribed for the relief of sport-related back injuries such as basketball, baseball or golf.

Another level of medication for back pain are Opioids. Opioids come in a variety of strengths ranging from the mild such as Tylenol and Vicodin, to stronger pain blocking medications such as morphine. If you have had a back injury serious enough to require surgery, chances are you have been prescribed an Opioid. Opiods are a narcotic drug and produce the most intense side effects, not the least of which is addiction. A study quoted by webmd.com states that as many as 70% of back injury patients eventually graduate to Opioid medications.
