Family-Law Paralegal – Specific Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Preparing and drafting motions, discovery, pleadings, orders and decrees, and other correspondence
  • Performing legal research
  • Maintaining case files
  • Scheduling appointments, court appearances, and mediation/deposition hearings
  • Calendaring crucial dates and deadlines, as well as reminders
  • Maintaining excellent and prompt client communications (act as liaison between the client and attorney)
  • Conduct initial client intake interviews
  • Conduct ongoing status meetings with clients
  • Preparing files for trial and providing legal assistance in trial and hearing settings

Communication

Communication is an essential and key element of this job. You will be responsible for maintaining effective communication with clients and regularly communicating with the responsible attorney to ensure continuity and efficiency in case handling.

You will be the primary liaison between the clients and the attorney handling the case and will also interface with the Courts and counsel in cases routinely. Thus, you must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and must be capable of handling clients who may be anxious, stressed and/or upset.

You will regularly be required to memorialize communications with clients, courts and counsel (emails usually suffice); summarize discovery (from clients & opposing party); and provide status updates.

These pleadings and forms generally only require basic information, but it is important to pay attention to the details, and ensure that all of the information is completed correctly and accurately.

A discussion with all potential new clients should be had, whereby the details of their case and anticipated issues are examined. You may be required to obtain additional information from potential clients, in order to assess potential conflicts or to delve into specific issues in more detail.

You should gather sufficient information from the potential new client to ascertain with the responsible attorney whether we want to accept the case.
